This design helps to incorporate in-line sample filtration and clean up devices, like filters and guard columns.
A guard cartridge can be easily inserted into the column holders by reversing the collets at the front end. This requires no additional hardware and adds no additional delay volume with respect to the more traditional approach of two columns and tubing.
This design also allows for truly resusable end fittings. Since the same column holder will fit any size HP-cartridge column of any of the offered phases, there is no need to remake the end fittings to accommodate a different column.
The guards can help to automate some sample prep, and are inexpensive compared to traditional guard columns.
