sometimes referred to as the "power house" of the cell because they are the site of most of the Eukaryotic cell's ATP production. They are shaped like little sausages and have a double membrane, the inner one of which is highly folded into membranous partitions called cristae. The enzymes for oxidative ATP production are located on the cristae. Glycolysis and the Krebs Cycle take place within the cytoplasm proper.
